What Is a Radiant Barrier?

A radiant barrier is a thin, reflective aluminum layer that reflects radiant heat instead of absorbing it. Where traditional attic insulation slows the conduction of heat, a radiant barrier tackles a different problem: the sun’s energy that beats down on your shingles, heats the roof deck, and then radiates into your attic like a giant space heater.

A quality radiant barrier can reflect up to 95% of that radiant heat, so it never makes it into your attic in the first place. That’s a big deal in Florida, where the air conditioner is the single largest energy user in most homes for much of the year.

The Two Ways to Add a Radiant Barrier

There are two common approaches, and the difference matters:

  • Radiant barrier roof decking — This is engineered sheathing (such as LP TechShield or similar) that has a reflective foil layer bonded to the underside. It goes on when the old plywood or OSB deck is replaced, so the foil faces down into the attic. This is the most durable, most effective option — and it can only be installed when the roof is off.
  • Retrofit foil sheeting — Reflective foil stapled to the underside of the existing rafters inside the attic. This can be done without a re-roof, but it’s more labor-intensive to install in a cramped, hot Florida attic and works best in homes with easy attic access.

There’s also a spray-applied radiant barrier “paint,” but in dusty, humid attics its reflective performance tends to drop over time as dust settles on the surface — so we generally steer homeowners toward foil-faced decking for lasting results.

Why Install It During a Re-Roof?

Timing is everything. When we tear off your old roof down to the deck, the sheathing is already exposed. If any of that decking needs to be replaced anyway — and in older Florida homes, some almost always does — upgrading to radiant barrier decking adds very little to the overall project. Trying to add a radiant barrier later, as a standalone job, means paying separately for attic labor you could have avoided.

In other words: the roof is off, the crew is already here, and the cost to include a radiant barrier is a fraction of what it would be as its own project. That’s why we bring it up during every re-roof estimate.

What Kind of Difference Does It Make?

Results vary by home, insulation level, and how much sun your roof gets, but in hot climates like ours a radiant barrier can:

  • Lower attic temperatures by 20–30°F on a peak summer day.
  • Reduce cooling costs by roughly 5–10%, according to U.S. Department of Energy estimates for hot, sunny climates.
  • Ease the load on your AC, which can help the system last longer and cycle less during Florida’s long cooling season.
  • Make second-story and bonus rooms more comfortable — the spaces that always seem to run hottest.

For a home that runs the air conditioner nine or ten months a year, those savings add up season after season.

A Radiant Barrier Is Not a Replacement for Insulation or Ventilation

This is important: a radiant barrier works with your attic insulation and ventilation — it doesn’t replace either one. Think of it as a three-part team:

  • Insulation slows heat that tries to conduct through your ceiling.
  • Ventilation (ridge vents, soffit vents) lets hot air escape the attic.
  • Radiant barrier reflects the sun’s radiant heat before it ever loads up the attic.

When all three are working together, your home stays cooler and your energy dollars go further. A radiant barrier is most effective when it faces an open air space and stays clean — which is exactly why foil-faced decking, sealed inside the roof assembly, performs so well over the long haul.
